Grow your business with world class educational support.
Education and business are innovation and collaboration partners at the Tonsley Innovation District, focusing on identifying industry needs and researching and developing smart solutions.
This collaborative culture encourages educational institutions to be heavily embedded in industry activity at Tonsley, with high-value manufacturing a primary focus.
Professor Colin Stirling, Vice Chancellor, Flinders University
"Our investment in Tonsley reflects our commitment to stimulating jobs growth, bringing our students together with the very best academics, researchers and entrepreneurs in a state-of-the-art facility that encourages innovation and drives new industry."
Flinders University has built a strong reputation for excellence in teaching and research underpinned by a network of strong external relationships and collaboration with industry.
Its Tonsley campus is a five-minute drive from its main Bedford Park campus and more than 150 staff and 2,000 students are located at Tonsley. The university runs a bus loop between the two campuses.
Flinders at Tonsley is home to the School of Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics, the Flinders Medical Device Research Institute and the Centre for NanoScale Science and Technology — all of which work alongside Tonsley’s other partners.
Flinders University is preparing graduates to work in Tonsley’s four focal industry sectors:
Flinders at Tonsley is also a hub for entrepreneurs and next-generation start-ups through the New Venture Institute (NVI). The NVI — the centre of innovation and entrepreneurship at the University — runs programs, mentors and helps the next generation of ideas to become reality.
More than 150 staff and 2,000 students are located at Tonsley and the campus promotes collaboration. It’s a place for students to interact with business and where business interacts with researchers in areas such as engineering, medical devices and nanoscale technologies to make the new products and processes of the 21st century.
The SIEC is Australia’s most innovative and advanced centre of its type. It brings together renewable energy, building and construction training under one roof, so students can learn and work together as they will in the workplace. Its specific learning facilities include a Cross Laminated Timber demonstration facility showcasing new technology in future construction applications.
Students interact with other Tonsley partners including ZEN Energy Systems (South Australia’s leading solar photovoltaic supplier, and developer and manufacturer of energy storage technology) and the Onshore Petroleum Centre of Excellence, which are both housed within the SIEC.
South Australia is home to Australia’s largest onshore oil and gas province, the Cooper Basin, as well as massive mineral deposits.
The South Australia Government is committed to further unlocking the economic potential these resources and Tonsley has a key role.
Officially opened in February 2015, the Onshore Petroleum Centre of Excellence (OPCE) at Tonsley is a collaborative venture for mining and energy companies and research institutions to make our state’s resources even more globally competitive.
The OPCE supports the development of local supply chains to enable South Australian based companies to compete nationally and globally, providing high value added products and services to the resources sector.
It supports innovative ideas with seed funding, acting as a catalyst for developing valued capabilities for industry.
By linking resource companies with applied research institutions and innovative services companies, the OPCE is fostering an innovative environment for the minerals and energy sector, increasing competitiveness, reducing costs and helping find solutions to problems.
The OPCE supports the collaboration of linking industry with local businesses and researchers.
