Be a leader in global research.
There are hundreds of world-class researchers in South Australia at the cutting edge of work in health, biomedical facilities, defence, Cooperative Research Centres, Universities, the CSIRO and other areas.
The vital and exciting world of research is an important and developing focus at Tonsley.
Flinders University’s students at the Tonsley Innovation District interact and work alongside our other partners, businesses and researchers in developing new products and processes for the global market.
Flinders University is also home to the Medical Device Research Institute, the Centre for NanoScale Science and Technology, and the New Venture Institute.
The Medical Device Research Institute is working toward being Australia’s leader in medical device research and development. Its areas of research include:
The Centre for NanoScale Science and Technology applies world-class fundamental research and know how to providing novel, robust solutions to the challenges facing Australia in the general areas of energy, health, security and water.
The New Venture Institute is a hub for entrepreneurs, innovators and start-ups, where it runs programs, mentors and helps the next generation of ideas to become reality.
The South Australian Government has built a $32.2 million Drill Core Reference Library to house the state’s entire collection of mineral and petroleum treasures from 120 years of exploration.
This reference collection — which will for the first time be contained on the one South Australian premises — was instrumental in both the discovery of Olympic Dam and BP’s decision to invest $1.5 billion in its offshore exploratory program in the Great Australian Bight.
7.5 million metres of drill core material generated from historical and recent exploration efforts is now easily accessible free-of-charge to mineral and oil and gas explorers in one of the world’s best ore deposit reference collections.
Information from this modern facility enables companies to better target potential discoveries before expensive drilling is undertaken — further driving exploration dollars in South Australia. It’s part of the State Government’s commitment to supporting exploration and mining which has earned South Australia high global recognition as a mining province.
As industry and explorers will regularly visit Tonsley, this also provides a prime networking opportunity for the mining and energy industry.
