Tonsley took home two prestigious awards and was amongst only a handful of entries in the running for the coveted Good Design Award of the Year at the 2017 Good Design Awards Ceremony held in Sydney.
The Good Design Award Best Overall for Architectural Design was awarded to Tonsley for displaying the highest level of design excellence in the architectural design category. There are only seven Good Design Award Best Overall accolades handed out each year, one for each design discipline.
The Jury commented: “The Jury commends the design’s overall innovation in deliberate removal of delineations between the ‘hard’ architecture and ‘soft’ landscape. The quality of the internal spaces is generously civic and sets the benchmark for a new type of adaptable space and sustainable design.”
Tonsley also received the Good Design Award for Sustainability for its commitment to the highest level of excellence in sustainable design practices. The Award is limited to only one recipient that in the judge’s opinion, will have a positive impact in promoting excellence in sustainable design.
The award validates Tonsley’s 6 Star Green Star – Communities certification, that recognises the development as a world-leader in sustainable design and building practices.
Precinct Director, Philipp Dautel and Project Director, Daniel Redden attended the award ceremony and are proud that Tonsley has received such a high level of recognition.
“The Good Design Award is amongst the most prestigious design awards globally. Claiming two awards in one night for the Tonsley Innovation District is such an honour and a recognition for the efforts of all those who have transformed this vacated car manufacturing site into a world-class innovation district” said Mr Dautel.
“This is a very motivating moment as we continue to develop the site, bringing design and sustainable excellence into every aspect, and attracting even more forward-thinking and innovative businesses to establish their operations at Tonsley,” said Mr Redden.
The Tonsley entry was a joint effort between Renewal SA, Government of South Australia, Oxigen, KBR, WSP, Woods Bagot, Tridente, RLB, Electrolight and the City of Marion.
