The University’s state-of-the-art, six storey, 18,000 square metre facility at Tonsley – designed by award-winning international architects Hassell – will be the home of the School of Computer Science, Engineering and Mathematics (CSEM).
Flinders’ New Venture Institute, Medical Device Research Institute, Flinders Partners, Southern Knowledge Transfer Partnership and the Centre for NanoScale Science and Technology will also be based at Tonsley in the new CSEM building.
Lend Lease is constructing the innovative building for the University and when complete, 150 staff and 2,000 students will be located at Tonsley from February 2015. In the medium to longer term, Flinders University will look to locate more than 6,500 students and 500 staff at Tonsley.
Flinders Vice-Chancellor, Professor Michael Barber said collaboration and entrepreneurship will be at the heart of Flinders’ activities at Tonsley, and the University’s recently launched New Venture Institute will focus and intensify Flinders’ entrepreneurial activities and education, to the mutual benefit of business and community partners and the University’s staff and students.
“We share the South Australian Government’s vision for Tonsley to become the lynchpin of the state’s high-value manufacturing future, and we look forward to seeing the precinct attract private and public sector support to achieve that goal,” Professor Barber said.
“This exciting new development is a very tangible realisation of our vision for Flinders University at Tonsley – a place where our students interact with business, where business interacts with researchers in areas of engineering, medical devices and nanoscale technologies, to make the new products and processes for the 21st Century. It will also be a place where the community interacts in a different way.”
