Try A Trade at Tonsley’s TAFE SA Campus
In partnership with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB), Tonsley Innovation District’s TAFE campus is giving women and girls the chance to ‘try a trade’. This initiative, born out of a need for gender diversity in the construction industry, will cover courses including carpentry, tiling, decorating and painting.
Currently, there are 756 female students enrolled at TAFE SA’s Tonsley Innovation District campus. However, through ‘Try A Trade,’ organisers, TAFE and CITB hope to see that number increase exponentially. Learning from the best in the industry, this program will provide women with invaluable skills to contribute to the booming construction sector in South Australia.

Try A Trade is a rare opportunity to foster and develop skills in a world-class training facility where hands on experience, industry insight and expert instruction is offered like no other. Presently, there are only five TAFE courses at Tonsley Innovation District that are female dominated: Interior Design, Certificate IV in Interior Decoration, Diploma of Building Design, Certificate IV in Building Design Drafting and Certificate III in Electrotechnology Electrician.

David Coltman also has faith in the program encouraging more women to try new courses at Tonsley’s TAFE campus.
“We’re seeing a growing interest from women in traditionally male-dominated fields, and we’d like to encourage more to consider a trades career.”
