STEM Works at Tonsley hosts Children’s University visit

A tour of TAFE SA’s trade area and simulated trade training classrooms was one of the many highlights the students from Lake Windermere Primary from Northern Adelaide experienced on the recent Children’s University tour of Tonsley.

With the challenges of 2020 preventing these tours from taking place, it was with much delight that 39 students, ranging from Years 4-7, were able to visit Tonsley as part of the Works Program’s 2021 sponsorship with the Children’s University.

Hosted in conjunction with STEM Fast Track, the tour provided an overview of the history of Tonsley, the industries now represented in the district and the subjects children and young people would need to study if they wanted to work in any of these businesses in the future.

TAFE SA also provided access to their plumbing pits, painting and decorating rooms and their bricklaying area, which gave the excited children some great hands-on exposure.

The Children’s University is an innovative program that engages children and young people in exciting, out-of-school learning opportunities to increase their chances for educational achievement and rewards them for taking responsibility for their own learning.

They will visit Tonsley again later in the year and Lot Fourteen in July, which will include a visit to the South Australian Space Discovery Centre.
