Further Car Parking Updates

Further changes are proposed to temporary parking provisions at Tonsley to enable the full closure of the remaining P3 temporary car park and make way for further proposed development, including a gym, a child care centre and supermarket.

Summary of key dates:

From Monday 8 July 2024:
– P5 TAFE SA car park extension complete and open to TAFE SA staff and students.
– TAFE SA students and staff directed to P5.

From Monday 15 July 2024:
– P3A car park closed to make way for development.
– Tonsley businesses, tenants and business visitors using P3A directed to P4.

As full closure of the P3 temporary car park will occur from Monday 15 July 2024, MAB tenants and visitors who previously parked at P3 are encouraged to use the P4 parking bay (pictured below). This car park is located west of MAB Circuit abutting the Flinders rail line and has more than 500 spaces for people who work at, or are visiting Tonsley.

As works to extend the TAFE SA car park will be completed on Friday 5 July 2024, from Monday 8 July 2024 TAFE SA staff and students are requested to transition to parking within the newly extended TAFE car park P5, south of TAFE SA on MAB Circuit (pictured below).

Construction updates

For more than a decade, Tonsley Innovation District has been pioneering innovation across a number of key high-value manufacturing sectors such as health, medical devices, and assistive technologies, as well as cleantech, renewable energy, automation, software and simulation, and mining and energy services. Its reputation as a global leader has attracted top minds and businesses, resulting in a community now comprising 150 companies and start-ups, over 2,000 workers, and 8,500 students.

In the coming months, Tonsley will continue its growth momentum with significant development planned across several of the remaining vacant land parcels within the precinct.

This includes construction at the former P3 temporary car park of the highly anticipated three-storey retail precinct on the western side of the Main Assembly Building (MAB), that will further enhance and elevate Tonsley as true live, work, play environment.

This retail precinct, by developer Otello, will deliver key amenities to the growing Tonsley community, including a supermarket, child care centre, gym and dining experiences that will spill out onto the Western Plaza reserve, facing the future Little Bang microbrewery within Tonsley’s old Boiler House.

 

Otello’s Tonsley Precinct, designed by Studio Nine Architects, is a multi-use area that combines business, education, retail, and residential sectors. This three-storey development offers retail shops, indoor facilities, a gym, and commercial spaces.

Construction at the southern end of the former P3 temporary car park will begin this month on 50 apartments at Tonsley in southern Adelaide as the Innovation District continues to expand its range of residential and retail offerings.

Schiavello, a national builder prominent in Adelaide and Melbourne, will lead the construction at the south-west corner of the Main Assembly Building which is expected to be completed by October 2025. A second stage of 63 apartments is on track to follow later this year.

Alternate transport options

As Tonsley changes its parking arrangements, it presents an opportunity for staff, students and businesses to reconsider their transportation options. Tonsley boasts multiple public transport alternatives, including a dedicated train station conveniently situated on the precinct’s western fringe, buses and the two-way Flinders Greenway pedestrian and cycling path.

Embracing active transport not only aligns with Tonsley’s commitment to sustainability but also provides businesses with an opportunity to enhance their ESG credentials. Encouraging staff to reduce their reliance on cars by utilising Adelaide’s rail network from Tonsley Railway Station, can significantly reduce environmental impact and commute times, with just a 20-minute journey to Adelaide’s CBD. Additionally, the ongoing extension of the Flinders Greenway, in collaboration with the City of Marion and Department of Infrastructure and Transport, promises improved connectivity between Tonsley and key economic areas in the south including the Flinders Hub, reinforcing its status as an innovative and sustainable district.

The Tonsley community is encouraged to utilise these sustainable – and more affordable – alternatives to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to their workplace’s environmental goals.

No Park 'n' Ride

Anyone catching the train into the Adelaide CBD from Tonsley should consider alternative parking options. There is no public Park ‘n’ Ride facility, nor is it associated in any way with the Tonsley Railway Station, which opened in December 2020.

Alternative parking solutions are being made available in the area.

A refurbished commuter car park on the west side of the train line, accessed via Woodland Road, is scheduled to be complete by around August offering a limited number of off-street parking spaces as part of the Alawoona Streetscape and Wetland Reserve Project. This car park will be managed by the City of Marion Council.

Additionally, a paid public multi-deck car park is planned at the northern end of the Tonsley precinct to cater for anticipated future demand.
